PoolTable

So you want a pool table in your home, which one do you get and most importantly have you thought about the room size you need to put it in? You see it’s all well and good to think that yes a 7 foot table will fit in that room nicely, but have you considered the room needed for actually playing the shots with full size pool cues? Remember pool cues are generally 57 inches long or 145 cms so ideally you will have to add 2 x 60 inches to each dimension of the pool table, to give a comfortable space to actually play the game.

Actually its not as bad as it seems as the playing area for a 7 ft full sized English pool table is 6 ft x 3 ft, so the actual room size you need is 16 ft x 13 ft if you are using full size cues and you could even get away with a smaller room say 13 ft square by using a short pool cue of 3 ft or so if the cue ball was on or near the cushion at one end of the room.  And for a six foot table the playing area is only 5 ft x 2 ft 6 inches, so the ideal room size would be 15 ft x 12 ft 6 inches. These dimensions are for proper slate bed pool tables like you find in the pubs and pool halls. Obviously for the American pool tables, the dimensions are larger, for an 8 ft American table, the room size would need to be 17 ft x 13 ft 6 inches and a 9 ft table needs a room size of 18 ft x 14 ft minimum.

So you could fit a pool table even in a relatively small room with a bit of imagination and a couple of short cues, I would recommend getting a piece of graph paper to work out the pool table room size you need before you part with your cash.

Room Size for Billiards Pool Table

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

The size of the room where the Billiards Pool table is kept has to be very precise and spacious. The table is quite big and should be kept in a room where players playing on the table, players waiting for their turn to play and spectators have enough room to sit and enjoy the game. The rooms can have any design but are mostly kept circular so that those watching the game get an overall view of it and are get a clear sight of the table on which the game is being played. The slate bed pool tables usually require some room to be placed where players get to position themselves properly and move around with ease when the balls are hit.

The room in which the state bed pool tables are being placed needs a thorough measurement. All the dimensions of measurement, the length, breadth and the height have to be taken into consideration before it is decided as the room in which the tables can be placed. When players are stuck up –playing pool where the room space is all cramped up, they have a tough time in making their shots. One might get wedged between the table and the wall and struggle for space to play the shot properly. Holding the cue again might be full of hassles as it may strike the wall while you get ready to play the shot. The situation becomes so awkward that players have to raise the cue up in air and then play with the chances of the shot being hit precisely being too low.

The size and position of the state bed pool tables will help in determining the space required in the room to keep them. The space has to be at its optimum best and such that the players do not feel as if there could have been more room. Players also have to slouch on tables at times while playing the shot and should have enough space between the table and the wall so that they can get into that position effortlessly. The cue is about 57 inches in length and should be measured to prepare for the space in advance. Regulation tables used for Billiards are usually larger than state bed pool tables in dimensions. If they are used for play, then the room size also needs to be twice.

Taking all these factors into account, the space has to be accordingly adjusted. The more the space is, the more enjoyable the game becomes because of the fact that people can come in, sit and enjoy the sound of the balls colliding with each other. This way, the players also feel good playing in front of a capacity crowd that is gung ho about the game and the potential results it might produce. Spacious places make room for more spectators to pour in, who subsequently increase the intensity in the ambience and help in making the game more interesting and watchable.

Convert Your Basement Into a Billiard and Game Room

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Basements around the country are popularly being converted from dark, damp, storage spaces to fun and exciting, new game rooms! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a room in your own home where you and your children can share in activities together like billiards, foosball and video games? It’s likely that your basement is merely where you store your Christmas decorations or do your laundry, and if this is the case, you should consider an alternative that will be fun for the whole family.

Clearing Out Space

The first step to converting your basement into a game room is making space. Most likely you’ve been using your basement for something, whether it’s where you do laundry or where you store rarely used things, and for this conversion to be successful, you’re going to have to find some place to put all that stuff! Hopefully this won’t be too much of a problem for you. It’s likely that you’ll be able to find some extra space in the attic, garage or hall closet. If not, it might be time for a yard sale! Yard sales permits are inexpensive, and you’ll be able to use the money you make from selling your old stuff to make your game room that much better! If you’re basement doubles as a laundry room, it may be less expensive to build a small pantry around your washer/dryer than to have new vents and electrical outlets put some place else. You might also be inclined to put up walls and finish the flooring in the basement to make your billiard and game room appear to be more a part of the actual house than a basement. If you are building a new home and looking to utilize basement space for a billiard and game room, you can work with your contractor to have this room finished as the house is finished – which is the least expensive method of doing so. Game rooms tend to drive up the resell price of the home, which makes them a wise investment.

Designing and Building a Game Room

Now that you’ve got your free space, you can start filling it up with new toys. A billiard table is a great start for any game room. In fact, you can center the entire room on the billiard table. As billiard tables are relatively popular, it’s easy to find billiard lamps and wall hangings for your new pool room. A basement is one of the best places to have some friends over and watch the game. Big screen TVs are getting less expensive every day, and are always impressive to male visitors. If this is your plan, you will also need some furniture, and you might be able to find some memorabilia of your favorite sports team to hang on the wall. Whatever you end up deciding, your new basement/game room will surely become the hot spot in the neighborhood, and a great place for a Super Bowl party!

Designing Your Billiard Room

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

A billiard room is a great room for you, your family, and your guests to have fun. Billiards, or pool, is a very popular game with family members of all ages too, so it can even keep the kids quiet while they learn and master a new game. The billiard room itself is a unique space in the house that requires good lighting, a decent table, plenty of room, and even a bar for a more authentic feel. The design of the room itself will be down to your personal preference but here are some factors you need to consider.

Measuring The Room

When measuring the room to buy a pool table, always remember that there needs to be room to stand by the table and play the shot. This means being able to draw the cue back without hitting it against the wall. Pool tables are available in 7 foot, 8 foot, or 9 foot models and while 9 foot is the standard regulation size it is more common for the home billiard room to include an 8 foot table because this usually allows players to comfortably take their shots.

Choosing The Lighting

Lighting is also important. Generally, the lights should be placed directly above the table and as centrally as possible. This helps to ensure that there are no shadows cast on the table either by other objects in the room or by the rail of the table itself. With lower ceilings it may be possible to opt for lights fixed into the ceiling, but higher rooms may require a hanging light as is often seen in bars and pool halls. Hanging lights like these enable you to control the light in the rest of the room independently of the pool table light so you can illuminate the billiard table without having to blind everybody in the room.

Slate Beds

Most players, professionals, and even novices advise the purchase of a slate bed table but if you do buy wooden or synthetic materials then you should consider the moisture and atmospheric conditions in the room. Tables with a wooden bed can easily warp and disfigure if it is not kept in the proper conditions.

Billiard Table Covers

Regardless of the material used, it is always advised that a pool table be covered when not in used. This helps the integrity of the felt on the table so that you can continue to enjoy a good looking table that allows you to play the best possible shots. The cover itself should ideally be mostly opaque so that the cover and the rest of the table is protected from light as well as from dust and other debris.

Cleaning Your Table

Some pool tables come with an accessory kit that includes items like felt brushes. If your table comes with a felt brush then be sure to use it regularly. Small pieces of debris not only interact with the balls but can lead to damaged cloth and balls. Brush the table before and after each use and cover it when not in use. Never chalk the cue tip over the table because chalking the tip always leads to some chalk trail being left behind and, again, this can lead to damaged cloth or damaged balls. It’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to damage the slate but this isn’t the only aspect of a billiard table that needs to remain in good condition.

Choosing the Best Pool / Billiard Table For Your Rec Room

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Once you’ve made the decision to purchase a billiard table, you are presented with the task of choosing which one is right for you. There are many different factors that could determine which one you should buy including, how big it is, what it’s made from, the size and material of the pockets, and the strength of the railing.

Where to Start
You should start your decision of which billiard table to purchase by asking, “Who’s going to use it?” This is important because a professional billiards player will need a regulation size pool table, made with higher quality materials. In fact, the regulation slate (the base of the table that the cloth goes on) must be 1″ thick and in 3 pieces. If your billiard table is going to be used primarily for children, you may be able to get a smaller table, made with less expensive materials, as they will likely not be banging off the rails very hard. A quality billiard table will be made from solid wood. This is the best option for you if you are an advanced billiards player, or if you plan to keep the table for many years. Cheaper billiard tables are made from some type of laminate covering over another type of wood. The railing is the most important part of the billiard table. A cheap railing will shorten the life of your pool table dramatically. The railing is made up of a sub-rail and rail cushion. The highest quality sub-rail will be made from solid wood. This is recommended for advanced players, as it allows for the most accurate rebounding of the balls. Rail cushions should be determined by the percentage of “live gum rubber.” A higher percentage of live gum rubber denotes a better quality pool table.

Table Space
The next question to ask is, “Where am I going to put it?” The room you put it in is very important, as you will not only need enough room for the table itself, but also an extra 4-6 foot perimeter around the table to allow space for the shooter. A regulation billiard table is 9 feet long and thus will need about 15 feet of room, to allow for shooter space. However, a child, who uses a smaller cue, may only need a couple feet for shooter space, and a smaller table. A smaller table, for a child to use will likely be 7 feet long. Now that you know the ins-and-outs of purchasing a billiard table, you should be confident in your ability to make the best decision for your upcoming purchase.

Saving Money on Billiard Tables
There are many online retailers who specifically sell billiard or pool tables, and buying online is a great way to save money – if the retailer offers discounted freight shipping. You can also find pool cues and other pool accessories online at a discount, including décor for the billiard room or rec room, like lamps, stools, rugs, and more.

Building a Billiard and Game Room on a Budget

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Building a billiard and game room on a budget can be a challenge that the whole family can get involved in. A billiard and game room will be a great place for gatherings and for entertainment.

The Plan
There should be a plan put in place when building a billiard and game room on a budget. The plan should consider all facets of building a billiard and game room on a budget. The budget should be based on affordability. There should be all factors considered when drawing this plan, including the size of the dedicated space, and the overall style of the house.

A Dedicated Space
A space dedicated as a billiard and game room does not have to be a fancy space it can be an attic space or in the basement or even part of the garage can be the dedicated space. Building a billiard and game room on a budget is an easier goal to meet if a space is already available and does not have to be constructed. Dedicating a room of the home to a space where family and friends can gather is a great idea and will increase the value of time spent at home.

Materials for Building a Billiard and Game Room on a Budget
A billiard table is not cheap when purchased new, so look for an older used version. Building a billiard and game room on a budget will require some ingenuity when gathering materials. Second hand materials are a good choice because it will help to keep the budget in tact. The billiard table will be the prime focus of the room and will be the most expensive piece of equipment in the room. The room could focus on big game tables such as fooseball tables or can be dedicated to the billiard table and small board games. Depending on the design depends on how much will be spent on the games for the room.

Types of Games for a Billiard and Game Room
A billiard and game room on a budget does not have to be a flimsy affair. The games in the billiard and game room can be as simple as a video game station and some seating along with the billiard table. A billiard and game room on a budget can be a billiard table and some other game stations, checkers, chess and the like. All of these items can be purchased second hand or can be created. A great game table can be created from an old parsons table refinished to be the base from a checked board to use with chess and checkers. Another great option for a billiard and game room on a budget is to use items that are already in the home.

Set A Budget and Stick to it
A billiard and game room on a budget can be completely within the budget as long as a realistic budget is planned to begin with. Shop around and get creative.

Cues, Balls and More – Outfitting Your Billiard Room

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Outfitting your billiard room can be an exciting endeavor. There are so many options on the market for cues, balls and more that narrowing your choices down may prove frustrating.

Where to Purchase Cues, Balls

Outfitting your billiard room should not have to break the bank. With a little ingenuity and perseverance the items to outfit your billiard room can be purchased reasonably. There are great online stores on the internet where you can purchase items to outfit your billiard room at a cut rate. There are also online auction houses where you can bid on the supplies for your billiard room at relatively low cost. There are discount warehouses that sell cues, balls and more at discount rates. Cues, balls and more, outfitting your billiard room can be an activity that is adventuresome if approached in the right manner. There is no reason to spend more than is wanted to outfit the billiard room; the time should be put in to investigate all options. There maybe some of these items available in second hand or thrift shops. A great place to look for these items is the classified section of the news paper. This should not be a decision that is made over night, keeping in mind that these items are a luxury item, meaning that they are not required for day to day living. To wait a day for a better deal will be well worth the effort. Jumping on the first deal that comes along is never a good idea unless the items are being purchased second hand with the possibility of the seller having another buyer waiting in the wings.

How Much will it Cost?

Prices will vary greatly for new equipment. Top of the line equipment can run into the thousands. Lower end equipment can be a few hundred, either way it will cost. Designing and decorating the perfect billiard room can be very expensive and certain considerations should be taken. How often will the room be used and how skilled are the users? If this is the first time anyone has any experience with a billiard room spending too much money on the equipment is not a wise choice. If the users are experienced and will use the equipment regularly than spending a bit more may be warranted. It is entirely up to the users as to what type of equipment to buy. Breaking the budget for recreational purposes is probably not the best option though, good inexpensive equipment can be had.

Styles

When outfitting your billiard room, you will need to concentrate on your personal tastes and the style of the billiard room that you have envisioned. There are many styles of cues, balls and other equipment for a billiard room on the market and the style of these items should match the billiard room. If the billiard room is done in wood with an ornate billiard table, a traditional look, then the equipment should have a traditional style to it. You can also choose more modern accessories in your billiard room – so it all “boils” down to your personal preferences. Take a good look around and make sure the styles match.

Moreover, you should have fun when decorating your billiard room – which is the best way to end up with a billiard/game room that you can be proud of!

Billiard Room Designs

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Billiards is a classic game that has been played in some form or another for centuries. It’s a game for people of all ages, and today is being played in pool halls across the country. The popular trend however, is for people to get out of the pool halls in exchange for playing billiards in their own homes! This dream can become a reality for you as well, once you design your own billiard room.

Spacing and Billiard Table Selection

The first step in designing your billiard room is figuring out how much space you’ll need. An adult or regulation size pool table is 9 feet long, and a smaller, child’s table will be about 7 feet long. Tables are also made in all sizes in between, so if space is an issue for you, you should be able to find one around 8 feet. You should also consider how much room the shooter will need. A good idea is to give an adult shooter 4-6 feet of space around the table, and 3-5 feet for children. Once you have an idea of the size of your billiard table, you can pick one out. If you plan on keeping your table for a long time, the best idea is to buy one with a solid wood frame, and solid wood sub-rails. You should also take note of the “live gum rubber” percentage of the rail cushion. A higher percentage is equivalent to better quality.

Decorating

The next step in designing your billiard room is decorating. A popular first step in decorating is billiard lamps. Billiard lamps come in all shapes and colors, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that is suitable to your tastes, and the color scheme of your billiard room. Billiard lamps are fairly easy to install yourself, but you may need some small tools such as a screwdriver or pliers. An old-fashioned juke box is a popular alternative to a big stereo system; however, the popular trend is for music to be played in the form of mp3s. A stereo with mp3 capabilities is probably a good investment, if music in your billiard room is important to you. Surround sound speakers are another popular choice for billiard rooms, as they aren’t too expensive and can be installed simply with the use of an instruction manual. Popular wall hangings for billiard rooms can be found at any home decorating store and at online billiards stores. You will also need a place to put your pool cues when they are not in use. Wall-hanging cue racks are popular in billiard rooms, as are cue racks that sit on the floor.

Once your billiard room is finished, you will have the ideal spot for entertaining friends and family for many years to come. As an added bonus, a game or billiard room is a sought after feature that many potential home buyers look for – which makes your billiard room a wise investment if you decide to put your home on the market later on.

Designing a High End Billiard Room

Friday, June 25th, 2010

A high end billiard room is a great way to use empty space in your home in a way that’s fun and entertaining for the whole family! Billiards is a great game that has been around for centuries and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. For this reason, billiard rooms are one of the most popular types of game rooms in America. Once you’ve designed your billiard room, I’m sure you’ll find that it will quickly become everyone’s favorite room in the house.

The Layout

The first step in designing your game room is making a layout. A layout can be made with just a pencil, paper and a measuring tape. You should start your layout by first measuring the dimensions of your game room. Make sure not to overlook the space needed for doors to open and shut comfortably. Once you know how big your game room is, you can decide what to put in it, and where to put it. Many people who are planning to build a new home will actually factor in and design a game room or high end billiard room from the start – which is the best way to cut costs on getting the billiard room initially.

The Billiard Table and Decorating

Obviously, the first addition to your billiard room will be your billiard table. Choosing a proper billiard table can make or break your billiard room depending on what you decide. High end billiard tables are made from solid wood. Cheaper tables will be made with wood, but with a laminate layer on top, and won’t last as long, nor will they play as well. You should also make sure the sub-rails of your billiard table are made from solid wood as they won’t wear down as easily. Also, be sure to check the percentage of “live gum rubber” that makes up the rail cushion. A higher percentage of live gum rubber denotes a better quality. The best quality of rail cushions won’t negatively impact game-play as they will provide the most accurate rebound of billiard balls. Once you’ve chosen a billiard table, you can begin decorating. Start decorating by choosing a billiard lamp. Billiard lamps hang from the ceiling above the billiard table, providing proper light for the players. You can choose the style and color of billiard lamps to compliment the style and color scheme of your billiard room. Another good option for billiard rooms is a stereo system. Surround sound speakers are an excellent idea, but you should be sure to hide the speaker wires, as these can look tacky when they’re run all across the room. You can hide speaker wires by tucking them under the carpet, and make them inconspicuous by running them up and down the corners of your billiard room. You should have fun designing your high end billiard room, as you and your guests will likely be spending a lot of time enjoying it for years to come!
